ABOUT

Jana Lynott is a Senior Strategic Policy Advisor with AARP Public Policy Institute’s Livable Communities team. As a researcher, writer, videographer, and keynote speaker, Jana brings to her work a passion for the role community design and transportation service play in the health and quality of life of people of all ages, abilities, and incomes. Her current research explores how “disruptive” technologies may influence the form and delivery of transportation services of the future. Her recent publications cover a variety of topics such as transit-oriented development, human services transportation coordination, accessible street design, and the travel patterns of older adults. Jana was responsible for the development of AARP’s groundbreaking Livability Index, initially released in 2015. This first-of-its-kind online tool measures how well every neighborhood in the United States meets residents’ needs. It uses a scoring system of 60 indicators spread across seven categories of livability: housing, neighborhood,

transportation, environment, health, engagement, and opportunity. Jana manages AARP’s transportation research agenda and is responsible for the development of policy related to transportation and other livable communities issues adopted by the AARP Board of Directors and presented in the AARP Policy Book. Prior to her work with AARP, Jana served as director of transportation planning for the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission, where she designed and managed a groundbreaking study on the link between land use and the mobility of older adults. She also initiated and managed a travel instruction program to teach older adults how to use transit services. As a land use and transportation planner, Jana brings practical expertise to the research field. She holds a master’s degree in urban and environmental planning from the University of Virginia and a bachelor of arts in global studies from the University of Iowa. She serves on the Transportation Research Board’s Safe Mobility for Older Persons committee and the Transportation Cooperative Research Program’s Development of Open Data Standards for Demand Responsive Transportation Transactions project panel. Between 2009 and 2015, she served as a Transportation Commissioner for Arlington County, VA and as a commissioner representative on the County’s Public Facilities Review Committee and School Multimodal Transportation Committee. Historically an active and busy volunteer, Jana is currently focusing more on her role as a soccer and music mom.
